Years ago, a child lay
Sleeping fast on a bed of hay.
The mother held her child close
Knowing he was the promise of hope.
Her husband bent on hand and knee :
From his eyes the tears begun to stream.
He held the tiny infant’s hand,
Knowing he was a blessed man.
Entrusted with a sacred gift
The child he began to carefully lift
He held him in his arms awhile
He stroked his hair, and began to smile.
He sang to him a lullaby song,
And rocked him gently all night long.
And after the shepherds left, and Mary was fast asleep
Joseph held the Christ child closer, and began to weep.
For he knew he was a simple man –
A carpenter, and nothing more.
How could he care for the Son of God –
The Redeemer, Savior and Lord?
But he loved the child that lay in his arms,
And vowed to protect him from all earthly harm.
Then, despite how inadequate he thought that he would be,
He raised the man who died for me!
For although he was a simple man
A carpenter, and nothing more;
He was chosen To care for the Son of God,
The Redeemer, Savior and Lord!
How he loved the child that lay in his arms:
He vowed to protect him from all earthly harm.
Then, despite how inadequate he thought that he would be
He raised the man who died for me!
This simple man
Raised the man who died… For me.
A simple man…
