Enjoy Them Now

Yesterday morning, I rolled out of bed,
After another night of interrupted sleep;
I heard my baby – how could he be hungry again?
And the kids started gathering,
Each needing something from me.

Where could I find the strength for this day?
A voice in my mind seemed to say…

“Enjoy them now – Enjoy them now –
For they’ll be gone, all too soon.
It doesn’t last, this special time,
When they’re always needing you: Enjoy them now.”

Then, this morning, a friend happened by;
She shared some memories and bittersweet sorrows of her own:
Her baby, so well – beloved was all grown up,
Preparing for college, preparing to leave home.

My friend looked at me, her eyes bright with tears,
And she told me to cherish every minute of these years.

“Enjoy them now,” she said, “Enjoy them now,
For they’ll be gone, all too soon.
It doesn’t last, this special time,
When they’re always needing you: Enjoy them now.”

And so this afternoon, while the sun is shining,
I’ll take the kids and we’ll play in the park;
And then tonight at bedtime, as I read to them and rock them,
In my heart I’ll pledge that from this day on I’ll start…

To enjoy them now…. Enjoy them now…
For they’ll be gone, all too soon.
It doesn’t last, this special time,
When they’re always needing you:
Enjoy them now… Enjoy them now…..
