That’s When Real Love Starts

There’s something I have come to see just lately –
Something that has tumbled through my heart:
When the magic and romance have all but faded,
Baby – that’s when real love starts.

When we realize that we’re two separate people,
That different rhythms drive our different hearts;
When we understand that love is what we work out together,
Baby – that’s when real love starts.

‘Cause we’re no longer seeing each other through a rainbow
We finally see each other as we are:
Two imperfect people doing just the best we can–
Reaching up together for a star.

When we leave behind old lessons, learned from fairy tales,
And stop expecting constant violins and harps;
When we realize it isn’t automatic, no,
Baby – that’s when real love starts.

‘Cause we’re no longer seeing our love through a rainbow –
We finally see things as they really are:
That we must work together, giving everything we can,
If we’re to ever reach that shining star.

When we understand that love’s a gentle flower
That can die if we don’t daily do our part,
When it’s something that we cherish and we nurture, oh,
Baby – that’s when real love starts.
Sweet baby, that’s when real love…
Starts!
